Hemorrhoids Home Treatment by Nnamdi Agha

Hemorrhoids refers to a condition in which the veins around the anus or lower rectum are swollen and inflamed. Hemorrhoids are swellings containing dilated or varicose veins situated in the mucous membranes of the rectum or in the skin around the anus.

Hemorrhoids can be treated at home successfully. Home treatment of hemorrhoid requires careful planning to avoid complications and unnecessary prolong hemorrhoidal pains and piles. The following ways can be used to manage and treat hemorrhoids at home:

  1. Take diets rich in fiber adapted to prevent constipation. You can decrease constipation and straining through exercising, walking and increase in fiber content of diets thus producing soft stools that are easier to pass out.
  2. Drink plenty of water.
  3. If the hemorrhoids protrude, cleanse the piles very gently with pieces of absorbent cotton wet with a solution of a level teaspoonful of salt in a pint of water, and gently press them back into place while lying down. You can apply pain-relieving ointments after the cleansing if the hemorrhoids are painful.
  4. Alternate hot and cold compresses over the rectum and perineum twice a day will help relieve pain.
  5. A daily hot sitz bath or a daily hot saline enema may do as well or better
  6. A number of methods may be used to remove or reduce the size of internal hemorrhoids.

    These techniques include:

    • Rubber band ligation. A rubber band is placed around the base of the hemorrhoid inside the rectum. The band cuts off circulation, and the hemorrhoid withers away within a few days.

    • Sclerotherapy. A chemical solution is injected around the blood vessel to shrink the hemorrhoid.

    • Infrared coagulation. A special device is used to burn hemorrhoidal tissue.

    • Hemorrhoidectomy. Occasionally, extensive or severe internal or external hemorrhoids may require removal by surgery known as hemorrhoidectomy.
